Time Signatures Explained: Meter, Bars, and the Two Numbers

What those stacked numbers at the start of a score actually tell you.

Short answer: a time signature is two numbers stacked like a fraction at the start of a piece. The top number says how many beats are in each bar. The bottom number says which note value counts as one beat. So 4/4 means four beats per bar, each a quarter note. Meter groups beats into bars

Music doesn't just tick along as an endless flat pulse. We hear beats in groups, and the first beat of each group feels a little stronger. That grouping is meter. A bar (also called a measure) is one full group, marked off by vertical barlines in written music. Count "ONE two three four, ONE two three four" and you're feeling a four-beat meter. The stronger ONE is the downbeat, the anchor your ear keeps returning to. Meter is what lets a whole band start and stop together, because everyone's counting the same bars.

The top number: beats per bar

The top number is the easy one. It tells you how many beats fit in a bar before the count resets. A 4 on top means four beats per bar. A 3 means three, which gives you the lilt of a waltz. A 2 means a tight two-beat march feel. That top number is really about how you count out loud, and it shapes where the strong and weak beats land.

The bottom number: which note gets the beat

The bottom number is where people stumble. It names the note value that counts as one beat, written like the bottom of a fraction. A 4 means a quarter note gets the beat, because a quarter note is one fourth of a whole note. An 8 means an eighth note gets the beat. A 2 means a half note. So in 4/4 the beat is a quarter note, and in 6/8 the underlying unit is an eighth note. It works the same way as reading a fraction: the bottom tells you the size of the piece you're counting in.

4/4 is so common it's literally called common time and often written as a C. Four quarter-note beats, strong on one and a lighter stress on three. 3/4 gives you three beats to a bar, that unmistakable waltz swing. 6/8 looks like it should have six beats, and technically it counts six eighth notes, but you usually feel it as two larger beats, each divided into three. That two-big-beats feel is what separates it from a plain six-count, and it leads straight to the next idea.

Simple vs compound meter

Here's a distinction that clears up a lot. In simple meter, each beat divides naturally into two. 4/4, 3/4, and 2/4 are all simple: tap a beat and split it "1-and, 2-and." In compound meter, each beat divides into three. 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8 are compound: the beat splits "1-and-a." So 6/8 isn't really "six beats." It's two beats that each break into three eighth notes. The bottom number pointing at an eighth note is your clue that you're probably in compound territory. This is also why 6/8 and 3/4 can be written with the same six eighth notes yet feel completely different. 3/4 groups them as three pairs. 6/8 groups them as two triplets.

How it connects to counting and subdivision

A time signature is basically a counting instruction. The top number tells you when to reset your count. The bottom number, plus the simple-or-compound split, tells you how to divide each beat as you subdivide. Get those two things straight and reading rhythm gets far less mysterious. When you count "1 e and a, 2 e and a" you're subdividing a simple beat into four. When you count "1 and a, 2 and a" you're subdividing a compound beat into three.
