Short answer: tap tempo finds a song's beats per minute by having you tap along with the pulse. Each tap is timestamped, and the tool measures the time between taps. What "tap tempo" means
Tap tempo is how a DJ or a bassist reads the speed of a track on the fly, no special gear needed. You listen, you tap a key or a screen in time with the beat, and each tap is recorded with a precise timestamp. The tool then looks at the gaps between consecutive taps (those gaps are the beat length) and converts them into a tempo. No sheet music, no analysis software required.
The formula: BPM = 60,000 ÷ average interval (ms)
The math is short. A minute holds 60,000 milliseconds. If your taps land, on average, one beat apart, then the number of beats per minute is just how many of those average gaps fit into a minute:

Why more taps mean more accuracy
No one taps perfectly evenly. One tap lands a hair early, the next a hair late, and each imperfect gap would give a slightly different BPM on its own. The fix is averaging. With just two taps you have a single interval, and a single mistake shows up at full strength. Tap four to eight times and the tool averages all those intervals, so the early and late errors partly cancel and the reading settles close to the true tempo. That is also why a tapped number keeps shifting as you go: each new tap refines the average.
Train the tap, not just the tool

The half-tempo and double-tempo trap
The one place tap tempo goes wrong is not the math but the choice of beat. If you tap on every other beat you will read half the true tempo; if you tap the eighth notes between beats you will read double. A track that is really 128 BPM can show up as 64 or 256 depending on which pulse you locked onto. This is why automatic BPM detectors sometimes disagree: they picked a different level of the rhythm. The fix is to tap the pulse you would clap to, the natural "walking" beat, and to sanity-check the result against the ranges you expect for the style of music.
Getting a clean reading
A few habits make tapping reliable. Listen for a bar or two before you start so the pulse is already in your body, then tap steadily rather than stabbing at the first beat. Give it at least four to eight taps and watch the number settle. When it stops drifting by more than a beat or two, it has converged. If the reading looks like exactly half or double what you expected, you almost certainly tapped the wrong level; reset and try again on the main beat. Rounding to the nearest whole BPM is fine for practice, though producers matching loops may want the decimal.
