Short answer: beat, rhythm, and meter are three different layers of the same thing — time. The beat is the steady pulse you tap your foot to. Three words that are not synonyms

In everyday talk, "beat," "rhythm," and "meter" get swapped around as if they meant the same thing. A song has "a good beat"; a dancer "has rhythm"; a poem "has meter." But musicians and researchers keep them apart on purpose, because each names a distinct layer, and the layers do different jobs.
