How to Build a Steady Internal Clock

Everyone begins with a natural pace, a spontaneous motor tempo of roughly two taps per second, about 120 BPM, and it stays fairly consistent from day to day. Training does not replace that default; it widens the range of tempos you can hold accurately around it and weakens the pull that drags unfamiliar tempos back toward your comfortable rate. Knowing your own default is a useful baseline: tap freely for a while, count the taps over 15 seconds, multiply by four, and you have a rough figure to train around.
The core principle
Every drill below is a variation on one idea: lean a little less on the external beat each time. A click gives you a correction on every beat; the goal is to remove those corrections gradually so your internal sense has to do the work. That is why practising in the silence, the bar where the click drops out, matters more than playing along with it. The click is training wheels. The point is to ride without them.

Drill 1: subdivide to fill the gaps
Between two beats is empty time where notes slide early or late. Subdivision fills that space with two or four evenly counted units, giving you anchor points to step through instead of leaping beat to beat. Set a comfortable tempo, say 70 BPM, and count "1 e and a, 2 e and a" out loud so every sixteenth gets a syllable. Once it is locked, keep the count running while you clap a simple pattern. Slow tempos are the real test, because the gaps are longest there.
Drill 2: the rest-a-bar test
This is the single most revealing exercise. Play or clap along with a click, then let the click keep sounding while you rest for a full bar, then come back in. If you re-enter early you are rushing; if late, dragging. The silence is where drift shows itself, because there is no click to lean on. Record yourself and the pattern jumps out on playback. Drill 3: reproduce a tempo from memory
Now remove the beat entirely. Listen to or set a target tempo, stop the sound, and keep the pace going for eight or sixteen beats before checking yourself against the original. This is the synchronization-continuation task researchers use, and the classic finding is a slow drift toward your comfortable rate once the beat disappears. Start with short holds and lengthen them as you improve. That unguarded stretch is the whole point; it's the muscle you're actually building.
Drill 4: widen your tempo range
Your clock is steadiest near your default and wobblier far from it, so the final stage is range work: run drills 2 and 3 across your whole comfortable range, not just near your default. That stretches accurate timing outward in both directions and loosens how strongly your default rate tugs unfamiliar tempos back. Measuring progress honestly
Track two things. First, direction: after a rest-a-bar test, are you consistently early, late, or centred? Second, range: how far from your default can you hold a tempo before drift creeps in?
