Chronkle is a daily tempo game. One hidden beat, five tries, and a simple question: can you produce today's speed from feel alone?

What Chronkle trains
Chronkle works your tempo production: the ability to summon a specific speed on demand instead of drifting to whatever feels comfortable. Every day hides one target tempo. You make a guess, the game tells you only whether you were too fast or too slow, and you close in over up to five tries. Nothing external holds the beat for you. You have to generate the tempo yourself, which is a harder and more useful skill than simply recognising one.
How to play
Trigger your guess to hear the tempo you are producing, read the too-fast or too-slow verdict, and adjust. You have up to five tries to land today's beat, and the same target is shared by everyone that day. Sound on lets you hear each attempt; the on-screen pulse carries the same timing if you would rather watch. Keyboard users can reach every control by tabbing and activating with Enter or Space.
How scoring works
Two things drive your result: how close your final guess lands to the hidden target, and how few tries it took to get there. Nailing it in two confident moves scores better than creeping up over all five. The feedback is directional only (faster or slower, never "how much"), so each try is a real decision, not a slider you nudge blindly.

Common mistakes
The classic error is over-correcting: hearing "too slow", then jumping far past the target, and ping-ponging around it. Move in halving steps instead. A second trap is ignoring the feedback direction and guessing from feel alone. Third, many players drift toward their comfortable rate (around 120 BPM for most) regardless of the target, worth noticing if your guesses cluster there. Finally, device latency and fatigue both blur the fine judgement, so a tired late-night result is not your best.
Practice progression
Chronkle is the "production" rung of timing practice. (5 min, beginner) play today's target with sound on and simply try to halve the error each try. The science behind it
Producing a tempo draws on your spontaneous motor tempo (a stable personal default of roughly two beats per second) and on a fast error-correction loop: hear the mismatch, adjust the motor command, repeat. Research on sensorimotor synchronization shows this loop is trainable, and that people tend to drift toward their comfortable rate when the target is unfamiliar. Limitations
Chronkle is a game and an informal self-check, not a clinical or diagnostic tool. Browser and device timing are not laboratory-grade, so results from different devices are not strictly comparable, and a single day does not fix your "true" ability. Your score reflects tempo production specifically, not musicianship, rhythm reading, or coordination as a whole.
Where it shows up
Tempo production shows up all over daily life. A drummer counts off a song at the right speed so the whole band drops in together; get that wrong and the first bars feel rushed or sluggish. A runner or cyclist sets a cadence and holds it without staring at a watch. A dancer hears the first beat and steps into the groove instead of catching up over the opening phrase. Even outside music, holding a steady pace underlies rowing and skipping and any repeated motion you want to keep even. In every case no external metronome is doing the work. You generate the tempo, check it against how it feels, and adjust, and that loop is what Chronkle exercises. It won't turn a non-musician into a session drummer overnight, and a game score is only a rough gauge. Still, the underlying skill of summoning and holding a target speed does respond to practice, and it carries over to anything where you set the pace yourself rather than following someone else.

What does Chronkle train?

Why do my guesses land near the same speed?
Most people have a comfortable default tempo around 120 BPM and drift toward it. Noticing that pull is the first step to producing tempos further from your default.
Does headphone lag affect my result?
It can. Bluetooth and some browsers add latency, so treat absolute results cautiously and compare your own trend rather than across devices.
