Short answer: tempo perception is the skill of sensing how fast a pulse is, telling when it changes, and holding or reproducing it yourself. It rests on a few building blocks: the beat, its measurement in BPM, the way beats divide into smaller units, the smallest change you can notice, your natural internal clock, and your ability to keep a tempo from memory. It all starts with the beat

The beat is the pulse you nod your head to. We measure its speed in beats per minute, and the arithmetic is clean because a minute always holds 60 seconds: divide BPM by 60 for beats per second, or divide 60 by BPM for the length of one beat. So 60 BPM is one beat a second. At 120 you get two, the beats half a second apart.

The grid between the beats

A beat is rarely felt as indivisible. Subdivision splits it into equal parts: two eighth notes, four sixteenths counted "1 e and a", or three for a triplet feel. Tracking those parts, usually silently, is one of the core accuracy skills in music. The extra internal units act as anchor points, so notes land where you intend instead of sliding into the empty space between beats. How small a change can you feel?

How small a tempo change can you actually notice? The threshold, called the just-noticeable difference (JND), is not a fixed number of BPM. It behaves like a percentage of the current tempo, which is Weber's law in action. For most people it lands around 2 to 5 percent, smaller against a bare click and larger inside full music.

Your internal clock

Left to your own devices, you have a natural pace: your spontaneous motor tempo, the rate you tap or walk when nothing tells you how fast to go. Across people it clusters around two movements a second, roughly 120 BPM, and each person's own comfortable rate stays fairly stable. Push much faster or slower and you tend to drift back toward that default, which is a big reason unfamiliar tempos are hard to hold. Knowing where your own internal clock sits helps you catch when a piece is pulling you toward it.

Tempo memory and reproduction

Sensing a tempo is one thing. Reproducing it after the sound stops is another. Researchers study this with a synchronization-continuation task: you tap along with a beat, then keep tapping once it is switched off. The typical finding is a slow drift toward your comfortable rate the moment the external beat disappears. That is exactly why recall is harder than tapping along, and why it is trained on its own. Staying steady: rushing and dragging

Steadiness fails in two directions. Rushing means speeding up, and it tends to strike in loud or exciting passages. Dragging means slowing down, and it shows up when a passage is hard or slow. Most players do a little of both. The reliable way to find out is to play along with a click, then let it keep sounding while you rest a full bar and come back in: re-enter early and you are rushing, late and you are dragging.
