Short answer: timing usually fails in one of two directions. What rushing and dragging actually are

Almost nobody decides to play out of time. Rushing and dragging are drifts — small, accumulating timing errors that pull the pulse off its intended speed while you feel like you are holding steady. That is the frustrating part: the drift hides inside your own sense of the beat, so you are convinced the tempo is fine and only a recording or a bandmate tells you otherwise.

Drift is easy to miss because of how we keep time. A beat is not a metronome running in your head; it is a moment-to-moment loop of predicting the next beat, acting, sensing the small error, and correcting. How to catch it: hearing your own drift

You cannot fix a drift you cannot feel, and the drift hides precisely where your attention already is. So the first skill is honest detection. The most direct tool is a recording: play a passage, then listen back against a steady tap or click and notice where you and the reference part company. Arrive before the click and you rush; land behind it and you drag. Many players discover their real habit only when they hear it from the outside for the first time.

A second method is to keep a quiet part of your attention on a fixed reference while you play — a metronome, a drone, or a subdivided count — and watch for the moment your notes and the reference start to slide apart. Where they diverge usually names your trigger: a crescendo, a hard bar, the third minute of practice. Naming the trigger is half the battle, because it tells you where to aim your attention next time.

How to correct it: subdivision, reference, and real-time feedback

The single most useful habit against both drifts is subdivision — silently counting the smaller units inside each beat.
