Polyrhythms Explained: 3 Against 2 and Beyond

Short answer: a polyrhythm is two or more rhythms with different groupings played at the same time, like a group of three against a group of two. Neither speeds up or slows down. What a polyrhythm is

Take a fixed length of time, say one bar, and divide it two ways at once. One hand plays three even notes across the bar. The other plays two even notes across the same bar. Both start together and both end together, but in between their notes fall in different places. That's a polyrhythm: two independent groupings sharing one span of time. It's different from plain syncopation, where a single rhythm accents off the beat. Here you have two full rhythmic streams running in parallel, each with its own internal logic.

How 3 against 2 works

3:2 is the gateway polyrhythm. Imagine a span you can count in six equal ticks. The "three" part hits on ticks 1, 3, and 5. The "two" part hits on ticks 1 and 4. They strike together on tick 1, then weave apart and rejoin at the top of the next cycle. Six is the least common multiple of 2 and 3, which is why a six-tick grid captures both layers cleanly. If you can count 1-2-3-4-5-6 evenly and place each hand on its ticks, you're playing 3 against 2.

A mnemonic to feel it

Numbers are one way in. Words are another. The old trick for 3:2 is the phrase "not diffi-cult." Say it evenly and the syllables land on the combined rhythm: "not" is the shared downbeat, then the two-side and three-side notes fall on the remaining syllables. Longer phrases exist for trickier ratios like 4:3, though most players just count the grid there. These phrases work because your speech naturally spaces the syllables to match the polyrhythm's grid. The least-common-multiple grid

The reliable way to build any polyrhythm is the counting grid. Find the least common multiple of the two numbers, then count that many even ticks. For 3:2 it's 6. For 4:3 it's 12. For 5:4 it's 20. Mark which ticks each layer plays, then count the whole grid at a steady, often slow, pace. It feels mechanical at first, and that's fine. The math is just a scaffold. After enough repetitions the two layers fuse into a single pattern you can feel as one thing, and you no longer need to count every tick.

Polyrhythms aren't an exotic party trick. They're central to a lot of the world's music.
