Silent-Bar Metronome Drills: Train Timing in the Gaps
A teacher's guide to the drill where the click drops out and your inner clock has to take over.
Short answer: a silent-bar drill is a practice technique where the metronome plays for a set number of beats, then goes silent while you keep the tempo yourself. When the click comes back, it exposes how far you drifted. You start with a short silence, one bar off for every bar on, then gradually lengthen the silent stretch. It trains continuation: holding a tempo from memory once the external beat disappears, which is the skill that real playing actually demands.

What a silent-bar drill actually is
Most of us practise with the click: it plays, we play along, and it quietly nudges us back on every beat. That is useful, but it hides a problem. As long as the metronome is sounding, you never find out whether the tempo is yours or whether you are just leaning on the beep. A silent-bar drill removes the crutch on purpose. You lock in with the click for a bar or two, then the click goes quiet for a set span while you keep clapping, tapping, or playing at exactly that speed. After the silence, the metronome returns, and the moment it does, you hear instantly whether you are ahead of it, behind it, or right on top.
It helps to be precise about which beat goes silent, because a similar-sounding drill does the opposite. In a rest-a-bar exercise the click keeps ticking and you fall silent, which tests whether you can re-enter cleanly. In a silent-bar drill it is the reverse: the click disappears and you keep going. That flip is the whole point. When the reference vanishes, nothing outside you is holding the tempo, so any wobble is coming from your own timing rather than from a missed cue.
The principle: continuation, not synchronisation
There is a good reason this drill feels harder than playing along, and it comes straight out of the way researchers study timing. In the lab, finger-tapping tasks are usually split into two phases. In the synchronisation phase you tap in time with a metronome; in the continuation phase the metronome stops and you carry on tapping at the same rate on your own. A silent-bar drill is simply the continuation phase dressed up for musicians: sync briefly, then continue through the silence.
Why does that distinction matter? Because the two phases lean on different machinery. When the click is present you can correct yourself on every beat, hear the beep, notice you were early, adjust. Once it stops, those corrections are gone, and you are left running on an internal timekeeper alone. Wing and Kristofferson's classic 1973 model described continuation tapping as the output of exactly such an internal clock, with the small timing errors we all produce splitting into a central timekeeping component and a separate motor-delay component. Later reviews of the tapping literature, notably Repp's 2005 survey, treat the synchronisation-continuation paradigm as the standard tool for probing that internal sense of time. The practical takeaway is modest but real: the silence is where the internal clock gets exercised, because it is the only stretch where the clock has nothing to check against. The core drill: one bar on, one bar off
Start deliberately easy. Set a metronome to a comfortable mid-tempo, around 80 BPM in 4/4, and program it so it plays one full bar, then mutes for one full bar, then returns, many metronome apps have a "gap" or "count-off/mute" mode for exactly this. If yours does not, just count "one silent bar" yourself while a friend or a second timer keeps honest score. During the sounding bar, sync tightly. During the silent bar, keep your clap or note going at the same spacing. When the click reappears on beat one of the next bar, listen: did your beat land with it, a hair early, or a hair late?
Do this for a couple of minutes and pay attention to the direction of the error, not just its size. If you are consistently early when the click returns, you rushed through the silence; if you are consistently late, you dragged. A wobble that flips from early to late and back is a variability problem, and it usually eases as you subdivide the silent bar internally rather than counting it in whole beats. The ratio ladder
The technique is really one dial: the ratio of sounding beats to silent beats. Widen the silent span and the drill gets harder, because timing errors have longer to accumulate before the click checks them. Here is a progression you can climb over weeks, not minutes. The tempo stays constant; only the silence grows.

Move up a stage only when the returning click lands clean two or three times in a row. There is no prize for jumping to four silent bars if you cannot hold one. The ladder is a template, not a rulebook, shift the tempo, change the time signature, or sit on a stage for a week if that is where the interesting errors are.
Reading the returning click
The genius of the drill is its honesty. A metronome you play along with flatters you, because your ear glues your note to the beep and you never notice the drift. A metronome that returns after silence cannot flatter you: the gap between your beat and its beat is right there in the open. Treat that gap as data. Early on every return means you have a rushing habit, most likely at the top of the tempo range where excitement pushes the pulse. Late on every return means dragging, which tends to bite hardest at slow tempos where the long gaps between beats invite hesitation, the same slow-tempo trap covered in keeping a steady tempo. Random scatter around the click points at variability rather than bias, and that is the thing extra subdivision and shorter silences tend to tighten first.
Common mistakes and fixes
Three problems account for most stalled progress. First, jumping the ladder: four silent bars feels impressive, but if you cannot re-enter cleanly after one, the longer drill only teaches you to guess. Second, counting the silence in whole beats: an empty bar counted "one, two, three, four" leaves acres of untracked time between numbers, so keep a finer grid running underneath. Third, chasing the click when it returns: if you hear you are late and lunge to catch up, you have thrown away the measurement. Let the return simply reveal the error, note the direction, and reset for the next repetition. And keep sessions short.
