About Chronsort: rank the tempos

Chronsort is a daily tempo-ranking puzzle. You get a row of beats at different speeds and one job: put them in order, slowest to fastest, by ear.

Tap any tile to feel its tempo, tap two tiles to swap their places, and keep rearranging until the row runs slowest to fastest.

What Chronsort trains

Chronsort works your relative tempo ordering: holding several speeds in mind at once and arranging them from slowest to fastest. Unlike a two-way "which is faster?" call, it asks you to build a whole ranking, which stretches both your memory for a tempo and your judgement of the distances between them. In effect you are sketching a mental BPM scale and placing each beat on it.

How to play

Tap any tile to feel its tempo. Tap two tiles to swap their positions. Keep listening and rearranging until the row runs slowest on one end to fastest on the other. There is no clock rushing you. The goal is the correct order, so re-listen to any tile as often as you need before you settle. Keyboard users can move focus between tiles and trigger playback and swaps with Enter or Space.

How scoring works

Your result rewards the correct final order, and tighter solutions (fewer swaps, less back-and-forth) read as more confident. Getting adjacent tiles right matters most where their tempos are close, since those are the hard calls; the obvious slow-versus-fast pairs are easy points. A perfect ranking with minimal fuss is the target.

Close-together tempos are where the challenge lives; a near-miss there is normal.

Common mistakes

The main trap is relying on memory instead of re-listening. A tempo you heard four swaps ago has faded, so play it again before deciding. Anchoring on the extremes (getting slowest and fastest right, then guessing the middle) leaves the close pairs unchecked. Rushing defeats the purpose; there is no timer. And as always, device latency and fatigue blur the fine distinctions between adjacent tempos.

Practice progression

Chronsort is an "ordering and memory" workout. (5 min, beginner) re-listen freely and focus on getting every adjacent pair right. (10 min, intermediate) try to fix the order with as few swaps as possible, forcing you to hold more tempos in mind. (weekly) pair it with Chrontween (the midpoint between two tempos) and Chronmber (faster-or-slower direction) to build the same scale from different angles.

The science behind it

Ranking tempos leans on working memory for tempo and on judging the intervals between speeds, not just their order. Sensitivity to those differences follows the same Weber's-law pattern as simple discrimination (closer tempos are harder to separate), and it improves with experience. The more tiles in play, the heavier the working-memory load, since each one has to be weighed against the others rather than judged on its own. Because that threshold is a roughly constant fraction of the tempo, two beats near 60 BPM only need to sit about 3 BPM apart to blur together, while at 180 BPM they can be a full 9 BPM apart and still feel like near-neighbours. Limitations

Chronsort is a game and an informal self-check, not a clinical or diagnostic tool. Browser and device timing are not laboratory-grade, so results from different devices are not strictly comparable, and one session does not fix your "true" ability. Your score reflects relative tempo ordering specifically, not rhythm reading or musicianship as a whole.

Where it shows up

Ranking tempos is the hidden craft behind a good set or playlist. A radio-station music programmer building a broadcast hour holds several speeds in mind and knows how they relate: not just which two are close, but the whole arc of the hour, so a 90-BPM ballad never lands flat straight after a 150-BPM opener. A music supervisor ordering cues for a film does the same, pacing scenes by tempo as much as by mood. A fitness instructor arranging a class builds a curve from warm-up to peak to cool-down, each track's speed chosen against the last. Even a runner assembling a training mix is, in effect, sorting tempos to match effort. What all of these need is a stable internal scale on which any speed can be placed and compared. Building that scale with practice is realistic, and it pays off well beyond the game, though a Chronsort score is a rough gauge rather than a firm measure, and the real skill of holding many tempos at once grows slowly. Across all of them the payoff is the same, smoother pacing built on a scale you can trust, and landing the close middle pairs in only two or three swaps is a fair sign that scale is taking shape.
