About Chrontween: find the tempo in between

Chrontween is a daily halfway-tempo puzzle. You hear a slow beat A and a fast beat B, and your job is to dial in the tempo that lands right in the middle.

Halfway by ear is trickier than it sounds. The true middle rarely matches the number you would calculate.

What Chrontween trains

Chrontween works your tempo interpolation: feeling the midpoint between two speeds. Given a slower beat A and a faster beat B, you produce the tempo that sits halfway between them. That forces you to treat speed as something you can measure and split, not just recognise, which is a surprisingly demanding step up from telling two tempos apart.

How to play

Listen to beat A and beat B as many times as you like, then set your answer to the tempo exactly between them. You get three tries to land it, with feedback guiding you toward the true midpoint. Take your time on the first try, since a careful opening anchor makes the next two adjustments much smaller. Sound on lets you hear each candidate; the on-screen pulse carries the same timing. How scoring works

Your result reflects how close your answer lands to the true midpoint, and how few tries it took. A subtlety worth knowing: the midpoint in BPM is not the midpoint in beat duration, because tempo and period are inversely related. Chrontween judges the tempo (BPM) midpoint, so trust the feel of the halfway pulse rather than mental arithmetic.

The wider the gap between A and B, the harder the split; a near-miss on a big span is expected.

Common mistakes

Locking in your first slider position without auditioning it against A and B wastes a try; play your candidate, then nudge it. Biasing toward the tempo you heard last (often B, the faster one) pulls answers high. Not re-listening to A and B before answering means you are splitting a half-remembered pair. And device latency plus fatigue blur the fine judgement near the true midpoint.

Browser and device timing are not laboratory-grade, so results from different devices are not strictly comparable, and one session does not fix your "true" ability. The score reflects tempo interpolation specifically, not rhythm reading or musicianship overall.
